It's the question that's plagued social media marketers for years: how often should I post to social media? There are several factors that come into play when determining how often you should post to social media. First, consider the platforms you're using and the audience you're trying to reach. Different platforms have different audiences, expectations, and consumption habits: for example, Twitter is known for its high volume of content, while LinkedIn is more focused on quality than quantity.

So, how much is too much? How much is too little? We looked into an array of reports and our past projects for guidance to discover the ideal number of times to post per week for each major social media platform.

  • On Facebook, post between 3 - 5 times per week

  • On Instagram, post between 3 - 5 times per week

  • On TikTok, post between 3 - 5 times per week

  • On LinkedIn, post between 2 - 4 times per week

  • On Twitter, post between 5 – 7 times per week

In reality, there is no magic formula for social media success. Every social media account is unique, what works for another brand, may not necessarily work for yours. However, we do have some proven strategies that can help you get the most out of your social media posts. So, instead of seeking magic formulas, let's focus on these proven posting strategies:

  • Establish consistency over frequency

  • Prioritise quality content over quantity

  • Define clear objectives for your goals

Strive for consistency, not frequency

Consistency is key when publishing content on social media. Whether you are posting once a day or once a week, it is important to not only be consistent with branding but also religiously keep up with your social media momentum. This will help keep your followers engaged and ensure that they continue to see fresh, new content from you, on a regular basis.  A regular posting schedule will help keep your followers engaged and informed. It can also be helpful to schedule your posts ahead of time using tools like Hootsuite or Later so that you never miss a beat! There are indeed many different factors to consider when developing a content strategy, but by focusing on consistency over frequency, you'll be well on your way to success.

Focus on quality over quantity

In the age of content abundance, quality beats quantity hands down. Finding the right balance between providing valuable content and bombarding your followers with too much information they don’t need. Invest time and effort in offering fresh, creative, and authentic content with relevance. Don’t speak at or down to your consumer but create opportunities for engagements that invite genuine conversations. Finding the right balance can be difficult, give time and make measured experiments until you find what works best for your audience.

Define clear objectives for your goals

Without specific goals in mind, social media can seem like a never-ending black hole. Whether you're looking to increase brand awareness, drive traffic to your website, or generate leads, setting measurable goals will help you track your progress and ensure that you're getting the most out of your social media campaigns. If you take the time to set your goals, and clear objectives to path your way to your destination, the pressure to find the frequency ‘sweet spot’ can be elevated. So don't neglect this important first step!

So, how often should you post to social media? The answer is different for everyone, and it depends on a variety of factors. However, by considering your audience, platform, and goals, you can come up with a posting schedule that works best for you and helps you reach your marketing objectives.
